Splash of Sunshine: BirdSpotter Folks’s Alternative Winner
| American Goldfinch by Eileen Chorba|
Our sixth BirdSpotter class was all about bringing a bit little bit of sunshine to those grey, wintery days. Congratulations to our BirdSpotter Folks’s Alternative winner for Class 6, Eileen Chorba of Seaside Lake, PA! Eileen’s photograph of this American Goldfinch, framed with these pink cherry petals, earned her essentially the most votes. Eileen says:
Spring is my favourite season and I at all times look ahead to seeing all of the blossoms. Our cherry tree supplies nice photograph alternatives when in bloom, and on this specific day the American Goldfinches have been having fun with it as a lot as I do!
American Goldfinches are a welcome sight in spring. Males molt again into their brilliant yellow plumage, a putting distinction towards their jet black wings. These birds are seen over a lot of the US throughout winter, and transfer farther north to breed into southern Canada. One of the simplest ways to draw them to your feeders is to offer sunflower seeds and/or thistle seeds (nyjer). They’ll come to tube, hopper, and platform feeders, and also will come to seeds thrown on the bottom. You may plant native seed-bearing crops to draw them to your backyard as effectively.
